What is rope climbing?
Rope climbing is a special form of free climbing in which aids such as ropes, bolts, and quickdraws are used for protection only, not for progression. The appeal of this type of climbing lies in both the physical and mental challenge it presents. It requires a clear head, endurance, and strategy.
A distinction is made between toprope climbing, where the rope is fixed at the top, and lead climbing, where the climber clips the rope into intermediate points of protection while ascending.
More complex climbing sections at greater heights demand a high level of concentration. In sport climbing, the climber is secured through a belay partnership, which requires proper knowledge of rope handling and belay techniques.
